I arrived in Cherating around 5:00pm yesterday, and it was a welcome break from the high paced city action I had seen so far.
Located right off the South China Sea, Cherating is a laid back surf town, with swells picking up during the monsoon season. The town is also known for its local batik artisans and the area's surrounding wildlife. It was also the site for Club Med's first Asian resort.
The buss driver dropped me off at the main highway, and I made the short walk towards town, where I was greeted by friendly locals fishing for bait fish. I found myself a a comfy little chalet, nestled in among some trees, in between the the river and the beach. i cleaned myself up, and walked to a beach bar to un wind a bit.
I took a walk around town this morning, as well as a stroll along the beach. Time doesn't really apply to this place. I think the locals like it that way. I rented a kayak for this afternoon. I plan on spending a few hours out in the ocean and cruising up the river. perhaps I will see one of the elusive Malaysian River Otters!
Tomorrow I am of for the capitol, Kuala Lumpur, to meet up with a friend and to see what the city has to offer.

Hey Mike, you are covering a lot of ground already; seems like you did your homework, as usual, and know where you want to go. the small world aspect of traveling, i.e. the people you meet from home in most unexpected places is so intreresting to me. we ran into several folks from SC in Firenze and then also in Venezia. I'm not planning a trip to Asia any time soon, so your pics and log are great. love, mom
