- Up about 7 am today having had a good nights sleep, the first thing was to go over the road to a tyre repair man to get the tyre fixed. It transpired that the valve fitting had pinched the tyre and blown the inner tube so we had to get a new one fitted. We also had to swap the tyres as our spare is not in as good a condition as the rest. Whilst winching the spare back up the hook that holds the wheel snapped and so we ended up getting a new one welded out of reinforcing rod at a building site next door. After a couple of hours again it was all systems go and off we set for the town of Merida once again. Surprise, we actually made it today and managed to park in front of the tourist office. Here we got more good news; the main reason for coming to this town was to go on the cable car of teleferico, the longest and highest in the world. It is a two hour ride giving spectacular views around. It is also shut for the next six months whilst they are replacing the main cables. Ok we though can you tell us were we can park for a few nights around here. Originally the answer is nowhere, then they suggest we try the University again and if not we could try the car park for the bullring although that is not guarded. In the end we parked in the bull ring car park whilst waiting to speak to people at the University. When we did speak they told us that the director of Administration was not there today and only he could authorise it. The end result was that we would just be staying one night where we were (N8.36.19.15 W71.08.30.73). We did manage to walk into the town to see what it looked like and to get to an internet. The town was a very modern town and is a major tourist centre for adventurous activities, like Para gliding and climbing as well as mountain walking. It was very much a hustle bustle place and I was even less impressed when we saw a family of rats next to one of the main roads. Still at least we had a good night in the car park.
