We did manage to leave for the border and as before it was a fairly painless crossing. Leaving the US we just left our visa cards with the man collecting the toll to cross the bridge. In Mexico we got stopped by the customs who just had a cursory look inside the vehicle, they then told us where we could park whilst we got our visa cards. I went there whilst Mary went into the office. As I was parking up the military decided that they wanted a look as well, I managed to get across that I would like to park there, get the visa and then they could search. This they allowed and so we got the visa papers, another quick search and then free to go where we liked. Since the vehicle was still making the screeching sound with the belts slipping we decided that we should go to a garage first. The nearest Mercedes was on the outskirts of Monterrey and so we went there. We arrived just before 5 pm and talked them into letting us stay overnight in their yard
We are eventually leaving the garage in Monterrey today, 27 September; the people could not have been more helpful and friendly. One of them lent his car so we could go shopping, all tried some English and although not the best of times it was OK. We are now on our way to the Caves outside of Villa de Garcia, to get into these caves you get a ride up a cable car and then it is a guided tour. There are some English speaking guides though ours was not. The caves were very impressive with a 2 kilometre walk around the main displays. These were huge examples of fluted stalagmites and stalactites. Nearly all are now dead, that is no more water is flowing and in fact we only saw three examples of water dripping. They tend to name various formations, some you need a particularly good imagination for, but a couple were good. One, the coffin was a very effective opening coffin just below a crucifix. From there we then drove on and are now parked up in a campsite in the town of Saltillo for a couple of nights.
