We had heard that Sioux Falls, South Dakota, actually has a nice set of waterfalls. We had an afternoon off, so we went to check it out.

The park was pretty nice. It's hard for us to find nice places to get some exercise, but the rocks around the falls offered some nice light hiking. The rocks, actually, were our favorite part of the area. The falls were nice, yes, but they were severely tainted by the industrialized city around them. From some informative plaques, we learned that the area used to be a very popular recreational area. People would take little boats out to the island and swim and play in the river. But when the city realized that the river could be used as a source of power, they redirected it, and ran all sorts of pipes and railroads. The natural beauty quickly became the site of industrial waste and runoff. The water is literally yellowed from years of pollution. There is no beautiful vista from the riverbanks, as factories and industry dominates the background.

Nevertheless, the Falls still draw a good number of camera-bearing visitors. We were no different. Enjoy the pictures!
