Our school was scheduled for a 9:18 show, so we arrive around 7:40. We get there, and are told to go to the auditorium. We do, and see that there's a choir class in there. We told the lady in the office, who responded "Oh yeah I forgot about them--they're in there until about 8:30, and that's when the show starts, is that going to be okay?."
"Wait--8:30? We understood we were starting at 9:18. Is that not the case?"
She pulled up the school calendar which verified that she was correct. And we were on a time crunch.
"Okay well if it's at 8:30 we'll need to get in there right away."
So we worked it out with the choir director that while we were setting up on stage, they would stand on the risers. Then when we were setting up on the floor, they would sit in the seats.
Great. I pulled the van around, and we unloaded our equipment into the auditorium. Time now, after all the confusion, is about 7:50.
We hurried our pace to accommodate a 40-minute set-up. No more than five minutes into our set-up, two school administrators came up to us with concern. "So.. are you going to be able to finish in twenty minutes?"
"Yes ma'am. We'll be ready for you. -- I'm sorry--did you say 20 minutes?"
"Yes we'll be bringing the kids in early so we can start promptly at 8:30."

Wow. Flare up the afterburners.
Kelsey and I were a blur, but by God's grace we were able to do our entire set-up in twenty minutes. Hope to never do it again.

We did two showings there, then left the school in our rear view mirrors.

We couldn't go far, however. Our brakes had been grinding for a couple days, and we couldn't allow ourselves to drive up all the way to Rhode Island without brake pads. We were fortunate enough to find a mall a few miles away from the school, where we brought our van to the Sears Auto. They said they hoped they would be able to get it done before they closed tonight. Well that made two of us then. We didn't have another choice. We would be driving up to Rhode Island that night whether we had brakes or not.

We left our van there, and enjoyed our time at a very nice mall. We ate cheaply at TGI Fridays with a coupon. After checking out an impressive display of all sorts of games at Barnes and Noble, we perused the mall. Brookstone offered relaxation in the form of their wonderful massage chairs.
We did some more Christmas gift shopping (we're more than halfway done in September!). And to kill the rest of the time in the afternoon, we walked a mile down the road to a movie theatre, where we watched the only show that was playing during the time we could be there. Eat, Pray, Love.
Pretty good! The theatre was overpriced, but the movie was enjoyable. The content and story was about what we both expected, but we both enjoyed it more than we thought we would, if that makes sense.

At the end, we walked all the way back to Sears Auto. They called us saying they were all done. And we were literally a minute away. Perfect timing.

So we drove away with brand new brakes (so you moms can rest easy), and hurried across Long Island and up the coast to our long-awaited hotel in Rhode Island. We finally arrived after 12:30. What a day...
