Our school in Kirtland, NM had a very nice Performance Arts Center. We learned that the community rallied to put the money together for this facility and now doesn't support it. So it is with the arts. But we made use of the space! But the real excitement for the day was to come after school. Kirtland is close to Ship Rock, NM. And Ship Rock, NM is as far North West as you can go in NM. And once you’ve gone all the way Northwest in NM, you reach the Four Corners - the only place in the US where 4 states share a corner, NM, AZ, UT and CO. So, we were very excited to drive, even 50 miles out of our way, to go stand in four states at once. The drive up there was pretty, but not really worth the outcome. We drove the entire way to this monument to find out it is closed for construction. There is only one road into the monument from NM and it was gated and locked. What could they possibly be constructing? It is a cement slab on the ground with the four states names on it. *SIGH* So, disappointed (and that’s an understatement) we turned our van around and drove the 50 miles back onto our route and drove the Albuquerque for the night.
However disappointing the 4 Corners monument was, we did enjoy a LOVELY drive through Navajo Nation. I must debunk misconceptions of New Mexico. When picturing this southwestern state, I thought: desert, hot, flat, John Wayne movies, and the like. However, as you can see in these pictures, New Mexico has a variety of landscapes. All of this surprised me. My camera was out constantly. I couldn’t capture enough of this beautiful land. Enjoy the pictures!
