We were just passin' through Amarillo--stayed a night, but nothing worth mention. Just two quick notes I guess:
1) Amarillo is a stinky cow town. We don't know why. Elsewhere,Texas is filled with cows. And the nice thing about it is that in general, they don't stink like cows. In Pennsylvania or Ohio, in our experience, when there are cows around, you smell them before you see them. In most of Texas, though, the air is clear of them. But not Amarillo. We smelled them the first morning we woke from our hotel. Oh well.
2) On our way out of town, we stopped at the Big Texan. It's a restaurant that makes Amarillo a tourist destination. We figured we couldn't leave Amarillo without stopping to eat there.
There are signs for miles around the town advertising The Big Texan's FREE 72 oz. STEAK! Of course... not without the fine print which states, "dinner if eaten in one hour."
And that's the catch. At the Big Texan, you can choose to challenge yourself in eating a 72-ounce steak (that's 4-and-1/2 pounds) dinner--including a shrimp appetizer, a baked potato, dinner roll, and side salad. All under an hour. If you complete it, it's all free! If not, well... The Big Texan fits you with a hefty 72-ounce--I mean "dollar"-- charge.

We talked with the waitress about some statistics. About 1 in 8 customers who try the challenge complete it. The oldest person to eat the dinner was a 70-something-year-old grandmother. The youngest? An 11-year-old boy. The fastest? I think something like well under 10 minutes--set by the latest hot-dog-eating champion.

We declined the offer. I was satisfied with my 8-oz sirloin, thank you very much. But Kelsey and I both raved that the steak was fantastic. The best steak in Texas to date. So, if you can handle the obvious touristy appeal of the place, the steak is definitely worth visiting.

I've attached some pictures of our Big Texan experience. Enjoy!
