So the night of the day we met our Intrepid group we went out for dinner to a place where the waiters were continually delivering more meat on sticks, plus an all you can eat salad/sushi bar. Very nice but a little more pricey than we were expecting - but nevermind. Unfortunately the next day I (Mike) was very ill and stayed in the Hostel all morning. We wondered down to the beach after checking out of the hotel at 12 o'clock, still feeling a little dodgy. Gem had a Guarana, while I took Avis's advice and ordered nature's answer to rehydration sachets - coconut water (agua de coco) straight out the coconut - which I thought was very nice - Gem's not so sure. It was Sunday and so some the road lanes along the beach front had been closed for pedestrians and the beach was heaving with people. While on the beach we witnessed a helicopter ocean rescue complete with life guards jumping from the helicopter to do various heroics, and a giant fishing net with which they hauled the flailing swimmers from the water and onto the beach. Very dramatic.

Anyway...we joined our group at 2pm and jumped onto an airconditioned minibus for about an hour (still feeling a little dodgy). We stopped in a little town with another beach and we sat in a cafe with drinks for about 45 minutes before catching a boat to the island of Ilha Grande. The boat trip and arrival at the island was beautiful as the sun was setting (and I managed not to throw-up which was a relief). Ilha Grande was amazing - a tiny mountainous island populated by about 4000 locals. Apparently it's the last remaining Atlantic rain forest - lots if waterfalls and thick vegetation with sparadic beaches - idyllic! We stayed in a little hotel/B&B/Pousada place with a double bed and rustic charm plus hammock on the porch. Other first impressions: good looking cakes for sale on the street and tasty looking icecream.

Day 2 in Ilha Grande - weather overcast but we decided to go for a walk to the other side of the island ... but that little adventure may have to wait for another time (if we get time to write it).

We're in Paraty at the moment - and fast running out of internet time!

To be concluded ...
