Today is actually day 3 but we decided not to spend money to use the internet yesterday. It's Still a bit grey and slightly drizzly. We had our first travelling experience of handwashing clothes and fashioning a washing line around our bunk out of cord. We avoided the Metro, not due to fear but because we're well 'ard ... and because we thought we'd have another stab at the area just round the hostel. We tried day one but apparently went completely the wrong direction. Now we have a very confusing map to guide us. The local area is very bohemian. We visited the steps which had been decorated with tiles by a locally based artist from Chile (we didn't see him). We then headed for 'Centro', another region of the city. Less busy than Copacabana in the morning.

We're starting to feel a little more relaxed and orientated, and noticed halfway through the day that we both had fat hands - probably the heat (about 24-28C). Swarms of people appeared on the streets at lunch time as people headed to food. We decided to do as the locals do and bundled into a restaurant place full of people. It was a 'weigh what you eat' type place, but posher than the previous day's - a bit of a gamble as we didn't know how much it would cost until we went to pay. I tried a  bit of everything - lots of strange things I only half recognised. Gem had less choice due to her gluten intolerance but still plenty to eat - she wasn't sure what was in the sauces/gravy type concoctions. We got back to hostel early afternoon and played cards for about an hour before heading out to buy dinner - papaya and guava (reminds me of Zimbabwe). When we got back we ended up playing cards with fellow travellers - Laco from Sweeeeeden and 2 girls from Belgium - all very friendly. Went to bed at about 9.30pm.

We're hoping to go and see Christ the Redeemer today. We've been putting it off waiting for brighter weather but are running out of Rio time. We'll probably book into another hostel tomorrow closer to our Saturday Intrepid trip rendevouz point hotel in Copacabana. We're currently interneting downstairs from a sex shop, but there are various Bible verses and what we think are warnings against looking at unsavoury materials 'because God lives here' (all in Portuguese)!

Stay tuned ...
