Where I stayed
Home Sweet Home
What better way to start off our adventure than with two natural disasters striking Guatemala - a volcano eruption and a tropical storm! Needless to say, the Guatemala City airport is closed, and probably will be for the better part of a week. They're dealing with a thick layer of ash covering most everything which was then turned to a thick paste when 20+ inches of rain fell. The worst damage is seen in the poorest sections of town - those with the worst building infrastructure - many shacks built into hillsides were swept away in this weekend's mudslides. In good news, the worst of the weather has passed!
We are now flying out tomorrow (rather than Wednesday) to San Salvador and will work our way back up to Guatemala. We've been in touch with our hosts in Antigua and were reassured of the clear skies and fresh shade-grown coffee waiting for us :). We hope we can still make it to the highlands in Nebaj for our first multiple day hike - if the roads are in rough shape, or the conditions too treacherous, we are also investigating volunteering to help with the relief effort.
...Never a dull moment! We'll be in touch from El Salvador.
