We set out from home soon after the morning rush hour traffic had eased off and made our way through the Swan Valley and up the Great Northern Highway towards our first stop at New Norcia where we expected to stop for lunch.

We have lived in Australia for nearly 27 years and up to now never had the opportunity to travel very far out of Perth so were really excited about getting out into the outback and visiting places we had only heard about up to now.

Our first stop was at Bullsbrook at a citrus stall to stock up on some fresh mandarins and oranges to enjoy en route.

We soon arrived at New Norcia, just 134 kms up the Great Northern Highway, where we arrived at midday.   This was already a route along which we had previously not travelled.

The monastery, chapel and St Gertrude's College buildings are magnificent old buildings kept in good repair and a popular day trip for many Western Australians. Their bakery has a reputation for really good bread so we had to buy a loaf to judge for ourselves and were pleased to find it turned out to be really delicious.  As we wandered around the grounds taking in the different buildings, we noticed that there were also a lot of young people wandering around.  After talking to a few of them we discovered that the place was being invaded by a hundred young Swiss Catholics on their way to the World Youth Day in Sydney later that month. We spoke to a young man who works in Einsiedeln and a couple of girls who were very excited about their visit to Australia.

After eating our lunch it was time to hit the road again as we wanted to reach our final stop for the day in good time to prepare our caravan for the night as we are still relatively new to being grey nomads and had lots to learn about our new lifestyle. Traffic was light and we enjoyed a leisurely drive through rolling green farming and grass lands with a backdrop of a beautiful blue sky dotted with some lovely cloud formations. We arrived at Dallwallinu mid afternoon and settled into our van site before meeting some of our neighbours for a chat. Dinner was cooked and an early night was in order as by now the skies had cleared and it was beginning to cool down.
