Penang for a budget traveller is not quite like the tourist brochures. With the rickshaw drivers passed out in their carts, trash all over the beaches and dodgy food, it was not as enjoyable as other places in Malaysia.

Firstly a further quick mention of the Cameron Highlands as we had a good time there enjoying the fresh air, rainforest walks and some fantastic curry! (hopefully we don't overdose on curry before India!). Drank lots of tea and felt rather British eating scones and visiting tea plantations. Our hostel was really nice too - Cameronian Inn for reference if anyone heads this way - and one of their long term guests took us on a 4 hour walk through the forest to a Chinese Temple.

Penang

Perhaps our expectations were too high, but we didn't really find Penang that exciting. The food was average most of the time (in case you haven't noticed, food is a bit of a theme for us), and the people weren't that friendly. We also had to endure an hour long local bus ride that didn't take us where we wanted (so we ended up back where we started) and a 5 am start to catch the train out of there. Travel isn't all fun and games! The busdrivers in Georgetown seem to have a bit of a blackmarket going also.

The main beach strip was about an hour bus ride from central Georgetown and was nothing like a lot of Australia's gorgeous beaches. A lot like Glenelg really but replace Jetty Road shops with hawker stands selling watches and t-shirts. We think that perhaps you have to stay in a resort and sip Pina Coladas by the swimming pool to enjoy Penang!

Welcome to Thailand

We made it across the border today and after a fair bit of travelling have arrived in Krabi in the south-west of Thailand. It is a refreshing change after Penang - full of life, friendly people, tasty insects and loads to do. Heading off to Ko Lanta island tomorrow for diving, fishing, massages on the beach and all round relaxation.

Did I mention travelling is hard work :-)
