Cairns is a small city, in a beautiful location in tropical north Queensland. The climate is warm all year round, although it does rain quite a lot. It did rain a bit while we were there but not too much, and the weather was great when it stopped.
In the very centre of town, a large lagoon has been built; and it and the grassy areas surrounding this are generally packed with bathers and sunbathers...respectively. Spent a few warm days chilling out there.
The nightlife in Cairns was brilliant, and we managed to get some very sore heads. Nice.
After a while, Mairead and Nicola took a flight back to Sydney for a week. Derek made friends with some German guys, who convinced him that it would be a good idea to jump out of a plane. Once Mairead arrived back from Sydney, we all went and did a skydive. From 14,000ft, you pick up speed pretty quickly and it gets a bit terrifying. Once the chute opens, its a nice few minutes of enjoying the scenery and trying to steer. Of course the guy strapped to your back does most of the work, including the very hard bit- the jump out of the plane.
All good, except we took almost no photos. Sorry! We have pix and video of the skydives, and will get them up soon.
