Camping Stobrec

The past week has been a blur. A blur of sun, relaxation, and a beer or two. At one point there may have even been a bottle of vodka involved, but at AUD $14 per litre it was hardly breaking the budget.

We arrived in Split last weekend and found a lovely campsite right on the water in Stobrec. Our plan was to stay here for 3 or 4 days to catch some sun and wait for the replacement part for our fridge to arrive. 8 days later and we're still here, although there’s not yet been any sign of the delivery. After a hectic first five weeks of the trip it has been great to just do nothing for a few days. We’re glad to be stuck at the beach in Croatia rather than in any of the freezing cold places we had been previously like Budapest or Vienna.

The prices in Croatia are also much more user friendly and we’ve made the most of sampling the cheap local cuisine, such as:

-         Lamingtons – that’s right, chocolate and coconut stuck on a sponge. Amazing!

Chicken schnitzel rolls – white breast chicken, crumbs, lettuce and mayo. Enough said.

Chip butty – perfect hot chips on a bread roll with tomato sauce. If they pull out some chicken salt we may never leave..

So maybe it’s not technically Croatian cuisine, but we love it! When Gem saw the lamingtons in a small bakery window she nearly exploded (she won’t let me type 'wet her pants’). We’ve also run through the majority of local lagers and at prices around 1.20 Euro per litre they’ve also been very user friendly.

We’re hopeful that by Monday or Tuesday our replacement fridge bit will arrive so we can head off. We’re thinking of continuing down to Dubrovnik and then comes the monumental decision – do we drive back around through Slovenia to Italy, or do we catch a ferry from Dubrovnik to Bari? Anyone who is familiar with our history of seasickness will understand the gravity of this decision...
