Dhofar, the southernmost province of Oman is a world apart from the industrious north and separated geographically by an interminable gravel desert. With its historic frankincense trade (smoky incents used in Mosques and Churches), great beaches, a laid-back atmosphere its well worth the trip across the Empty Quarter which is horizon to horizon of nothing.
We drove the more scenic coast line to Salalah first and on the return took the way through the Empty Quarter. Vast and rough gravel and sand desert with just a few small villages along the 1000km journey. However, it was the small desert village of Shisr where we met a Beduin who drove us to 'his' sand dunes, made fire at the camp and told us stories of the Beduin live in the past and today before falling asleep under the stars which is unforgettable.
