Intriguing, Thought Provoking, Memorable, Inspiring, Interesting, Audacious, Great Characters; this is our second blog segment dedicated solely to exceptional people we meet while traveling
Steven from Mei Mei Café
Energetic, intense, and opinionated, Steven helps run Mei Mei Café in Jinghong, China. He is a 45ish looking Belgian from Antwerp, married to Yanlan (a.k.a. Mei Mei). So he is businessman, café-teur, engineer, artist, and videographer.
What makes Steven Intriguing?
Steven is a wonderful documentarian. He showed us pieces of a fascinating video documentary of the towns of Litang and Yuanyang. The scenes of Yuanyang terraces were beautiful. And he took those a step further and showed the area in all seasons; Summer, autumn, winter and spring. He showed us segments on Litang, a Tibetan town we have not been to yet. The images reinvigorated our desire to go there. It was professionally narrated. Then he told us the video had been shown at an international documentary festival in Antwerp.
We wanted another chance to see the whole thing and asked him if it was available on the web. "No! No youtube for my work" He exclaimed. Why not?
A – He doesn't want his serious work to be sullied by being among all the 'shit’ that gets posted on youtube.
B- While making money is not the main goal; he doesn’t want others to profit from his work well he gets nothing.
Lessons Learned from Steven
We mentioned to Steven that we were on our way to see Litang but the cold weather caused us to change our plans. It just got too cold we said. “Too cold?” he said with élan. “Never let the weather stop you!”
Steven meant it very literally, like ‘if it is cold, put on a jacket’. I took it more figuratively; ‘When life presents obstacles, don’t make excuses, take measures and pursue your dreams’
