Saturday, August 6th

We had interest from four people who couldn’t make the timing work because of 30 day visa limit for their country or the dates where a bit off. In the end, Sophie, Matt and Alex (who decided to do only the first 5 days and leave the tour at Khovskol lake) and Mr. Hong (call me ‘Pancho’) a 64 year old solo Korean who was ready to go and up for anything, including the 35 days in our custom plan. He's staying in UB with an Asian version of "couch-surfing" family. He is more adventurous than the typical Korean. They usually travel in groups too. Pancho seems pretty nice but does brag a bit. He has studied 20 languages and kept rattling on about languages. We hope he does not overdo it. But he seems to be a sport and said he will eat anything and everything is ok with him. We're in for an interesting month+!!

The Khongor tour coordinator wrote up a 35 day, 5000km (3100 mile) plan on the big map on the wall and the six of us went through it with him on Saturday morning. We took notes feverishly as he gave a brief description of each day’s activity. Alex was reluctant go with us because she wanted to travel independently. But Matt and Sophie liked the simplicity of having it all catered and set to go. We made a few adjustments to the route to accommodate their timing.  All six of us were itching to go and decided to take off the next day, Sunday.

Finally, we got it all organized!

The Khongor ‘Package’ plans include a Russian van that holds eight (including guide and driver), fuel, basic meals, entry fees, and driver, English speaking guide, (who doubles as a cook). We did some last minute provision shopping for extra ‘treats’ not included in the package and some gifts for the families we expect to encounter along the way. Outside of UB the selection will be very limited. Cookies, crackers, peanuts, peanut butter (Costco package of Skippy crunchy!!) We picked up some mosquito hats (with veil) like beekeeper because on our horse trek to reindeer people we'll likely encounter flies and skeeters. Our rears will be sore but we know it will be worth it. Not many people go through the time and trouble to visit them. It is definitively off the well worn tourist track.
