Where I stayed
Getting ready to leave San José, Costa Rica
We did not have a reservation at Hotel Aranjuez and when we called they were full. But we decided to take a chance on a late morning no-show and try to stay there anyway. From the Caribe bus station, Michelle took a cab to the hotel. Dave took a walk into central San José in search of bike boxes. We hadn't planned to leave from here so we did not have boxes lined up. But Dave remembered passing a large bike store during our stay here. So he went there first.
As he struggled to explain our situation, in Spanish, to the store clerks, they stopped him and told him to speak english. Whew! Shops usually give the boxes away but this shop wanted $5 each. Dave was trilled to have found boxes and gladly paid.
We did get a room at the hotel where our bikes were stored and proceeded to fill the boxes. We disassembled the bikes and put them in the boxes with all the other luggage that would fit. Each box weighed almost 30 kg (66 pounds) by the time we were finished.
San José is a city covered with grafitti. While we would prefer to see a lot fewer prison compound style walls, we think the art form looks good on the walls. Here is a sampling of my favorites.
