12/21 Aqua Blanca to San Agustinillo—37.5 km
Elevation gain 519M
Avg slope 4.5%
Max slope 15.3%

Despite our shortage of sleep, we were up and loaded in record time. We knew we had a couple of kilometers on the traffic-less dirt before getting back to the main road. There was a chill in the air and we were fortunate to witness a glorious sunrise.

By 8 am we had peeled off 20 km in the cool of the morning. We stopped to have our cereal, yogurt and jicama at the side of the road. Two teens were busy trying to catch an elusive iguana, for dinner they said. Wonder what they taste like?

As it heated up though, we slowed a bit. We made the turn-off to the loop road that runs by the beach areas and were surprised to see the hilly approach. The shoulder-less loop road was in great shape and the scenery around (palms, wildflowers, etc.) gorgeous. We hit another incline and expected it to be brief. But it faked us out several times and seemed to go on forever. Then we zoomed down to the village of Mazunte and we instantly could tell we were in gringo paradise. Pizza, Italian and other cozy palapa restaurants posted menus and signs near their entrances in English.

We expected to stay in Mazunte or the more backpacker oriented Zipolite. But we spoke to an American couple, who have a retirement home there, and they pegged us for the types who would prefer the quieter more family oriented San Agustinillo beach which is saddled smack in the middle of the other two. So we went another kilometer to San Agustinillo and didn’t feel compelled to investigate any other options. First, we zeroed in on one of many palapa restaurants on the beach. It was a bit early for lunch still so we had a juice and soaked up the tranquil scene. Nobody was playing any crazy music and the sounds we could hear were the waves crashing on the shore and light breeze blowing through the coconut palms.

After lunch, Dave checked all the accommodation options along the sand as well as a few on the mountain side of the road. High marks went to Hotel Mexico Lind and we rolled our bicycles a few palapas up the beach, to it. The cold shower takes a bit of getting used to, but once you are in, it is refreshing. We sat on our second floor veranda and watched the waves roll in and reveled in this serene scene. .

Germans, French, and American visitors are here to bask in the warm sun and sand and enjoy the good food. We did the same for 3 days........

Our favorite restaurant is Paraiso del Pescador: Fantastic breakfast, dinner and view! Casa Tío Nerone Italian restaurant and guest house is a small place with no view but has delicious food with potato salad to die for... Restaurant El Sueño de Frida (Kahlo)... simple Mexican style breakfast served by really nice people & wifi.
