Km marker 200 at 2570 m to Ciudad Hidalgo at 2086m

60 km/ trip alt 467 m/1532 feet(ouch)/avg climb 3%/ max climb 11% /max alt 2790m/9153 feet

We awoke around 7:30 am and enjoyed the twitter and Brrrr, Brrrrr sounds of the little hummingbirds. We watched their delicate silhouettes on our tent wall as they seemingly stood still in the air while sipping nectar of the tiny flowers. What amazing little birds they are.

We are happy that we have the luxury of time and can stop and smell the wildflowers, so to speak, along the way. For us it is all about the journey, not the destination.

We decided to skip breakfast expecting we soon would get to a village where we can refuel. We should know better.... The few kilometers turned out to be an ascent of 12 km's. I read other blogs where that is a cinch. But for us, at least, it is a 2 hour pedal. We took frequent breaks to rest, take pictures, and ooooh and aaaah at the incredible vistas. We stopped at small waterfall next to the road to rinse the dishes dirtied the night before. We came to small village with charming little churches but no other services. Finally, after several false summits, we made it to the top.

Then we enjoyed a thrilling 20 km downhill where we didn't have to touch the pedals more than once or twice. The vista in front of us opened up to golden fields of corn in the foreground and green forested mountains in the distance. After 8 km's we squeezed the brakes to stop at the first (and what turned out to be last) restaurant in awhile. As she pointed to the river below the restaurant, the cook cum waitress told us that the only thing on the menu was fresh caught fish. Sounded great to Michelle but Dave asked for, and received, huevos (eggs). The place was cold thus we were not tempted to linger. I enjoyed my 4 tasty little fried fish and Dave devoured the scrambled eggs, refried beans and fresh tortillas. Refueled, we were on our way again.

After more downhill joy, we arrived at La Venta where we checked out the only hotel on the edge of town. La Venta is a bit in 'nowhere' and it was still mostly downhill for another 15km to Ciudad Hidalgo. We were pretty tired but decided to continue.

In CD Hidalgo we quickly found the Zocolo (or central plaza). Dave went on foot in search of hotel while Michelle stayed with the bikes. The hotel right on the plaza had a nice sunny rooms facing the plaza but they did not have wifi. So we opted for a tiny room in the clean Hotel Morenita, several blocks from central plaza, where we could park our bikes in the colorful flowery backyard. We had not showered since Morelia three days before so a shower was our first priority before we ventured out for a bite to eat.
