40.3 ml/65km/ alt 336 m

Back to highway 1 and the beach route through Seal Beach, Sunset Beach and Huntington beach where the route gets more difficult.

Climbing 336 meters doesn't seem like a lot. But for me especially, it is a real struggle. I crawl up them in granny gear and wish for more gears!  It is really slow going!! On long hills I have to take at least a few breaks along the way. I am just grateful that the sun isn't beating down on us. I keep telling myself that it will get easier when we are better conditioned. Little by little, we are getting used to the front panniers. Still, we hope to unload a few pounds of it before we cross the border.

We pass through more sleepy beach communities with laid back surfer feel, a few yoga and spiritual awareness places. And then the more upscale neighborhoods, with exclusive galleries, spiritual retreats, bistros and doggy spas, like Shell Beach, parts of Newport Beach, and Laguna Beach.

And none too soon at around 4:30, we rolled into Doheny State Campground near Dana Point and set up our tent. Soon thereafter, a New Yorker, currently living near Bainbridge Island by Seattle, arrived. And then two Colorado girls, who had flown by us near the beginning on our trip, joined us in our hiker/biker campsite. They just finished their Masters in Environmental Engineering and one is going on for 5 more years to get her PHD.They are finishing their border to border Pacific Coast ride soon. They started mid May. Fantastic to meet young people with so much ambition.

Not even the noisy trains rambling by at regular intervals kept us from having wonderful sleep.

Bonnie on

I'm surprised that you're having trouble pedalling. It must be the weight of all you're carrying. Keep building those muscles. I was in Ocean Beach 2 weeks ago. Interesting place. Stay safe and healthy.
