We sleep like logs and awake around 7 AM. Neither of us is anxious to get out of our warm cocoon into the freezing air. Dave bites the bullet first and starts breakfast. I start packing up our bags and mats and emerge just as coffee is ready. The sky is blue. But cold shadows linger long in these deep canyons. We have some oatmeal and by 8:45 AM we are on our way. We take the 9.5 mile Bright Angel Trail this time.  We cross the Colorado river about 3/4 miles down river from the bridge we crossed on Kaibab trail. We "Oh-Ahhh" today not because of the views, but because our calves and thigh muscles are tight and sore. Stepping up feels better than stepping down.

We follow the river for 1.5 miles before heading through and up deep canyon for 3.2 miles before reaching the little oasis of Indian Garden Campground. It was 1:30 by now and continuing another 4.8 miles to the rim would take us until sundown. Had we started earlier and made better time, we could have continued to the top. We're slowpokes today and have not done any serious hiking since our Venezuela Rorima trek a year ago. We do about 1 mile an hour. In any case, we enjoy this trip immensely.

We stick with our original plan set up the tent at Indian Garden. And bask in the sun before it, all too soon, disappears behind the intimidating towering canyon wall we have to climb tomorrow!

The only other people on the campground are 3 guys from New York. They were resting up for 4 days at Indian garden before heading further into the canyon. I get a secret joy out of guys half our age stumbling around in pain too!! This is our 5th time on this hike and only once were we in such great shape that we didn't ache.
