Who would have guessed that a baseball team that only a couple years just missed having the worst season of all time is now on top of the world?
Now back in Detroit/Taylor, joined by Monte from Argentina (who has, in the month we've been apart, been to Peru, Bolivia and Argentina, suffered an intestinal infection, and then a wild 5-hour plane delay on his way back to the states). We went to the Tigers-Cardinals game on Sunday; My brother nabbed tickets for a suite. Lovely day at Comerica Park, good game, and the Tigers completed a sweep of STL (poor Monte, the Cards fan). Downtown Detroit is slowly but surely looking better and better.
Mostly visits and more visits and eating and more eating. I've eaten Lebonese food three times now and I think that will tide me over for awhile. For my friends who don't know it, metro-Detroit has one of the largest Arab populations outside of the Middle East. Hommus, crushed lentil soup, chicken shwarma and fattosh salads have been a staple in my diet since childhood (although I guess a lot of foods have...) In fact, right now I smell to high heaven from a little garlic dip my mom and I split for lunch. I'm sure Monte will be thrilled when he gets back from his first round of golf since our wedding five+ years ago...
On a very sad note, Mom and I attended the funeral of a family friend, Pat Hardin, who died rather suddenly of cancer. Pat was a longtime pal of my mom, and we shared the same birthday. Spent lots of summer days at her home with her absolutely stunning daughters Deanna and Lori, who now have kids but who still look model-perfect. My heart broke, seeing them try to cope with their beloved mom's death. I remember that pain far too well. The girls and Pat's husband are in our thoughts...
We're here in MI until Thursday when we move on to IL, Chicago, the city of whipping wind, a lovely lake, deep dish, Chinese food heaven at the House of Fortune... That scale dial threatens daily to keep creeping up.... up.... From there we will head south to Mattoon.
Besos a todos. I miss you all and we'll be rooting for both Argentina and Brazil in the cup... I guess if both end up in the finals, I'll finally have to commit....
