chefchaoun

- set amongst the riff mountains and relatively close to tangiers (3-4 hour bus), chefchaoun is deservedly popular with young spainards popping away for a couple of days.

- little big of a seedy drug culture around, had a couple of unpleasant run-ins with unsavoury characters; much more so than anywhere else we visited in morocco which was a shame.

- no denying this is a gorgeous town; stunning mountain sunsets, blue-washed traditional buildings, stacks of hiking options, ancient walled area complete with a mini-medina and a striking kasbah... enjoyed our two nights, three days here.

- stayed in a cool little hotel; blue room, nice rooftop, eccentric owners...

- met mike from the states on the bus from Fes and then met Josť, from ibiza, at the bus station in chefchaoun....hung out with these guys a bit which was nice.

- walking day; had a stroll out of town up to a hill-top/abandoned mosque; quite rugged, dry, scrubby and rocky country; charming... great half day outing.

- sunsets; one absolute corker, with the call to prayer ringing out across the valley...

- sardine joint; love of moroccan style sardines, another super cheap place offering soups, fish, chips and meat dishes; YUM!

- snails/chickpeas on wheels; great little mobile stall run by a friendly fella, mark liked these snails even more than the ones in Marrakech, chickpeas were also fabulous.

- kasbah; the old fort/palace, really compact, central and striking....some contemporary art on display as well.

tangiers

- good to get back to tangiers; not such a bad place at all.

- best sardines in morocco.

- enjoyed a market wander (seemingly our favourite pastime).

- had the obligatory tea/coffee at the paris cafe; by this stage of morocco, Mark was firmly aboard the coffee wagon and suffered some nasty caffeine withdrawals once the habit was kicked...

- bought some more shoes (just in case we hadn't bought enough pairs in morocco).

back to spain

- mark got an upset tummy at 6 in the morning just before we started our walk down to the port to catch a boat to spain and then two buses all the way to granada.

- cleared up okay after a few hours, thought we were in for a real treat.

- easy-ish bus connections (bit of waiting around) on the way to granada....
