Porto Covo and Silves, Portugal

- when we stepped of the bus we thought "jeez, this one backfired" but it grew on us.
- would be very touristy in summer, but mostly portugese tourists; whitewashed houses, feels like a wierd little fishing village.
- camping porto covo our accomodation choice, scored a pre-fab shack for 20 euros a night.... kitchen, bedroom, bathroom; very cosy and fun to do some cooking and catch up on our washing.
- stayed one full day (two nights), went for a beatiful walk down the coast to a fort on an outcropping bit of land, indulged in magnum and strolled back along the beach.
- cheap wine (under 2 euros as good as a $15 bottle in Aus)
- lovely walk down the coast to a fort on the promintory
- caught up on our washing, reading and resting.
Silves
- bit of a haul getting here, lots of fiddly buses, cost us an arm and a leg.
- Stopped in Villa Milfontes, had a couple of hours to poke around and catch up on some chores.
- Dropped into a nice little municiple market.
- Silves ins a stunningly located town; tourist office closed but found a cheap pensao without too much hassle.
- Silves was the Moorish capital of southern portugal for a few hundred years; the medieval cathedrals are built around minarets of moorish mosques and the hill is topped with a stoic fort.
- great and cheap diner, pretty much in a lady's kitchen, mark had Baccalhua with chickpeas and clare had fried fish fillets with salad!!!!!!
- onto the train the next day, another portugese travel saga, the buses to the train station arrive 5 minutes after the trains depart...so one has to arrive 2 hours before the train leaves!!!!!
- beatifully scenic train trip....maybe the guidebook built it up a little too much because we weren't blown away!!!
- arrived in Tavira in the pouring rain; perfect conditions to trek into the centre of town.
