So to update I got a chance to talk to a couple of younger VIA rail attendants.  Isca and Deni have been with VIA for the last five years.  Both having joined VIA Rail at the age of 19, they are doing their post secondary education a little different than most.  Taking three courses while they work full time, based out of Winnipeg these two young people are working in a field most don't even know is hiring.
They can do anything from making up beds to serving food in a rocky environment.  Isca is of Cree descent and is going to become a nurse, which is what she is studying for.  Deni wants to get into business but is not sure what he wants to do yet.  Neither one is interested in working for VIA Rail for their careers.  Not because the job is poor but because you have to be a certain type of person to work for VIA Rail.  Isca can get off at her home base in Winnipeg and then get called to work another 6 days the next morning.  But you get to travel anywhere in Canada for free, positives versus negatives.
