6 MAY 2010 - One night in Bangkok makes the world your oyster blah blah blah blah.....
Our bus trip took 7 hrs and we arrived in Bangkok at 4pm and it was very hot. Troy was trying to work out how to catch the skytrain but looked like it wasn’t at this bus station so we caught a taxi. It took 1 hr to get to our hotel, we chose Rambuttri Village Inn just off the well known backpackers street of Th Khao San. We got to our hotel just after 5pm and jumped in the rooftop swimming pool, it was fabulous but we found out it closes at 6pm so we just made it for a swim. After the swim we headed off to get some dinner and check out Th Khao San road. Its just around the corner from us. We walked up and down the street several times. We had chicken, beef and pork skewers (5 for 50 baht) less than $2 and they were yum. We then had pad thai from the street vendor for 20 baht each (66 cents each) and that was our dinner. Anything goes here, the street was jam packed with stalls selling just about anything you want from t-shirts, bags, jewellery, tattoos, cd’s, sex shows and heaps of restaurants and bars playing loud music. We had a ‘very strong’ cocktail for 80 baht each (just over $2 each), Troy had a screwdriver and Mary had a pina colada, they weren’t that strong but cheap. We bought a ‘same same but different’ t-shirt for Troy and a DVD (My life in Ruins) as the last one we bought had crappy sound. It turns out that the movie we wanted is not in English so we had to pick another one. There was a guy that kept trying and trying to convince Troy to go to a ‘ping pong’ show, it was quite funny and for those who don’t know what it is, we will tell you later. We walked around the many stalls in our street and then headed back to our room. Its a happening city!
7TH MAY 2010 - Last full day in Bangkok. Today we spent all morning having breakfast and searching for accommodation on the internet for Rome. We finally decided to stay at the Pop Inn, who knows what its like, Rome is so expensive and not expecting anything special anywhere unless you pay mega euros. We then went back to our hotel for a swim in the pool. We then went for a walk down Th Khao San road and Mary had some cheap pad thai. We walked around checking out some streets nearby and then went back to our hotel for another swim. Its really hot. We then headed off back to Th Khao San road to return our DVD which is in Thai and couldn't get the same movie so we had to get another different one. We walked up and down Th Kao Shan road. We decided to go to a show and was taken there by the most craziest flippen tuk tuk driver in Bangkok. He was driving like a bat out of hell and we were on this pissy little 3 wheeler "lawn mover" thingo called a tuk tuk that had no guts but he knew how to rev the crap out of it. We returned to our hotel and crashed.
We haven't spent a great deal of time here in Bangkok but must say we certainly didn’t hear or see any of those red shirt people so really there was absolutely nothing to worry about. There are tourists around this backpacker area but for the Thai people they have noticed that there has been a big drop in tourists at the moment. For Mary Bangkok wasn’t as bad as I was expecting as I haven’t heard any positive things about Bangkok. I would of stayed longer but we are on a mission - Europe!
I can’t believe it, we have already done Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. Time is flying by for us, its going way too fast, the days just go by too quick, lots of sightseeing and little rest.
8TH MAY 2010 - Today we fly out to Rome. We leave Bangkok at 6pm and hopefully this flight with Singapore Airlines will be better. We had a late breakfast early lunch at the Chart restaurant in Th Khan Road. It was great, so tasty and great spring rolls, chicken skewers and onion rings and the best pad thai we have ever had, all so yummy. We had to spend our last baht. We caught our shuttle bus at 1pm and headed to the airport which took about 40 minutes. Driving to the airport we see just how big Bangkok really is, its huge. We are ready for our next adventure, Roma. Seriously, we had nothing to worry about with the red shirt people as we never saw them or heard them.
We get to the Bangkok airport way too early at 1.45pm. We couldn’t check in till 3pm so we waited around and trying to cool off in the aircon. Bangkok airport is huge, very modern and very nice airport. We looked around the shops for a while and then went and had an early dinner because we had to spend what baht we had left. We got some wifi happening so we updated our blog which as usual takes sometime. We boarded our plane and we left Bangkok at 6.30pm for our 2 hr flight to Singapore. We arrived in Singapore and had only 2 hrs to kill so we just looked around the shops and bought a compact flash card and visited the Butterfly Garden which was beautiful. We left Singapore 1/2 hr late and then arrived in Rome at 8.10am.
