Where I stayed
White Desert Camp
Western Desert Hotel
We stopped at a felafel shop to get supplies for lunch - fresh bread from the oven and felafel, fuul, eggplant and babaganoush.
From there it was westward ho towards the Al-Kharga Oasis which was our lunch stop.
Our driver for the day had a lead foot and pushed the bus to 135kph in places - ahh - Egyptian drivers.
After lunch at Al-Kharga and the tradition mobbing my school kids we headed towards Dakhla Oasis which was our overnight stop and stepping off point for the White Desert
Next morning we left early for a stop at Al-Qasr which is a medieval/Ottoman town. Mud brick building and narrow streets.
Onwards to Farafra Oasis where we had lunch and transferred to 4WDs for our trip out into the White Desert. we also picked up an armed (sub-machine gun) policeman whose was to be our security while in the desert.
We headed some 120km further west until the landscape began to change dramatically, browns and grey gave way to stunning white rock formations protruding from the sand, we left he road and headed out amongst the formations until we reached our campsite just before sunset. The drivers set up camp while we found good perches for sunset.
We were treated to yet another stunning desert meal, BBQ chicken over the campfire with soup, rice, veges and bread. Certainly haven't gone hungry at any stage during the trip.
Slept out under the stars - which were pretty awesome - clear desert air and no light pollution means the Milky Way is clearly visible.
Up with sunrise and a nice brekky before we packed up and headed on the way. Took regular off road excursions to climbs dunes and see Crystal Mountain and the Black Desert. We reached our overnight stop of Bahariyya early afternoon and after lunch retired to the rooftop garden of our hotel to have a couple of beers and unwind.
