We had a leisurely wake up and made a gas/grocery stop in Brugge before taking off around noon.  A leisurely start to be sure, but one that was deserved after a big day yesterday.  We hit a bit of traffic near Antwerp along with a few detours and road closings but nothing too serious.  We have a GPS unit along on the trip and it is really a lifesaver.  Whenever we want to plot or plan our route for the day, out comes the GPS to look at alternatives.  I remember using paper maps, but I can't image a trip like this without a GPS - it saves us hours every day.  And I think it saves Lisa and me from lots of frustration trying to find our way around when neither of us really knows where we're going.

We ended up just north of Boppard, Germany.  Our campsite overlooks the Rhine river and the first thing that Kaden, Senn and I did was go for a swim.  The water was bracing but once you got in it was very relaxing.  Barges ply the water frequently and we watched them go by with all sorts of cargo on board.  We remembered hearing about the barge trip that my Mom and Sister took here and imagined how much fun it must have been.

Both sides of the river also carry roads and railroads so this river valley, as it has for at least two thousand years, is a major transportation artery through Germany.

The river is also lined with vineyards from which the famous Rhine wine is produced.  We'll have to try some before we leave.

The evening was spent relaxing and eating another delicious dinner cooked by Lisa.  Both hamburgers and fresh Belgian mussels were on the menu this evening.  Dinner was accompanied by a selection of Belgian beers.  Yummy!

Senn and I were the mussel eaters (a lttle wine, a lot of garlic, a lot of bread for mopping). I love the Belgium grocery stories - they have tons of quick meals shrink wrapped and ready to heat up,. I think that's one of the best things about traveling this way--we get to go to the markets and get the local food we like. Yogurt has been a big hit, especially the Belgium Bonne Maman.
