!!!!!!! HORRRRRRAAAAAAAAYYYYYY !!!

Finally - I'm off! There's been so much toing and froing, and so many changes to the original plan even me, the mastermind behind the trip, was getting confused. I was starting to settle to the idea that this journey was just not meant to be this time. The original plan has been completely overhauled but at least I'm finally off with two pairs of flip-flops (pink and black), a pair of sandals (earthy colour shall we say?) and a pair of trainers (red). Tempted though I have been to pack a pair of totally unsensible orange high heels and an almost naughty pair (should you be that way inclined) of red PVC boots, I figured there may be a shoeshop visit or two along the way.

It's definitely no fun watching your dream fade away. It feels a bit like just missing the last bus that you've legged it for and then at the precise moment when you're ready to leap onto the bus, the driver looks you in the eye, closes the door and drives off leaving you to inhale the fumes. Actually it's not like that at all, it's a lot worse. I've always dreamt of travelling around the world and now seemed like the perfect time and perfect oportunity to do it. Last year was a difficult year at work and needing to travel, get away and have fun is top priority for 2005.

But a lot of things have simply just not worked out recently and I've been pondering where it all went wrong, and what I could have done differently. I lost a bit more money than I first expected when I cancelled the original flight, the estate agents didn't find suitable tenants (well, they did, but the perfect tenants changed their minds at last minute) being in London without working, paying for the mortgage and general living costs seriously eats up your budget, travel time etc etc etc - you know what I mean. It seemed there were obstacles between me and my dream it was starting to feel like I simply wasn't meant to go - I mean at one point even the computer at Trailfinders conspired against me and didn't want to sell me a ticket!! Honestly the momentum was seriously starting to go. I seriously considered just staying here with the Italian poet, work for a bit and maybe do the whole travel after Christmas next year.

But I am a stubborn viking, and when stubborn vikings set their minds on something... So on the practical side my flat is being looked after by Matt who just got back from his round the world (obviously being me I have left him a hefty manual on how to take care of my pad and a pile of take-away menus) I feel safe knowing he's looking after it, and it gives me more freedom than if I was renting it out. I run out of money - I come back early, I find a long-haired Argentinian tango teacher -I stay longer. I've kissed the Italian poet goodbye yet again, we're getting quite good at the goodbye thing by now but it doesn't make it any easier. I will miss him so much but we will see how it goes when we meet again.

The new, revised trip is that I travel as long as my money lasts starting in INDIA rather than Brazil, then I head for two quick pitstops in Thailand and Oz before heading to Quito and Galapagos. Then the rest of the time in South America. So it's totally reversed! After all the change of plans and what has felt like several encounters with brick walls recently India seems like the perfect tonic. So now I will be yogaing first and then sambaing last. I've worked out I can afford to be away for 5 months if I don't got totally mad with my money. Being the responsible young lady that I am I know very well the two lines that may leave skidmarks after my credit card:
1) 'Oh, when am I going to be in the neighbourhood again?'
(Then again, I am not going to deprive myself of Galapagos and other important excursions, though this line may, in emergencies, also be applied to posh hotels with hot water)
2) 'Oh, I am sure you can't get shoes like these at home.'
(Then again, I am not going to deprive myself of shoes you simply cannot get at home..)

Nobody likes to compromise on their dreams. Needless to say I am very dissapointed and gutted I am not going for the whole hog - but HONESTLY - am I really in a position to moan and complain about it? I'm still swapping boots for flips-flops, scarves for sarongs and cold cream for P20. It's going to be an adventure - just a mini one rather than the epic I had planned.

I'd better get off actually - being the queen of lastminute.com there are still a zillion things I should have done and a zillion I haven't got around to doing just yet... Ops!! My flight is at 10.20 today - then next stop Mumbai !!!!
