Happy Birthday Auntie Madeleine!!!!! We hope you had a great one!
Darsey reporting on the road
What a day that was! Jam-packed with exploring and fun! Our first job after breakfast was finding Internet. Where did we go to find it? I'll give you a hint: there were golden arches and bad hot chocolate. That’s right! McDonald’s!
Next on the agenda was a trip into Kaysersberg. We checked out the local glass-blowing. It was incredibly cool! We got a chance to see the glass-blower create three glass birds. It was very neat to watch.
Then we wandered aimlessly around the cute town, stopping to look into some of the shops. There were a few very nice things, especially in one beautiful jewelry store. Also, we saw a fairy statue which seems to pop up in every town and every store. Fairy and dragon statues are very popular around here, evidently.
After a couple hours of that, we decided it was time for lunch. Katie in particular was hoping to have some crepes in France, but since Rowan and Mom couldn’t eat that (because of the wheat), they ate at a different place with Dad. Cailean, Katie, Jen, Grand-maman and I all ate together at the crepes place. We managed to work around the fact that there were no chairs and no forms of seating available. The man at the restaurant was very amusing and offered us free pretzel and macaroon samples. He was clearly looking for friends.
After that, we pilled back into the cars and drove our way to Haut-Koenigsberg. The castle was beautiful! The walls were pink stones with windows and archer’s windows cut directly into them. Looking out those windows made me feel like a princess. The doors of the castle were each uniquely designed black metal. They were particularly spectacular.
Then, we returned home to Riquewihr. Mom and Dad went back to McDonald’s for the Internet. Grand-maman then took the five cousins to dinner. We ate some very tasty food outdoors in a restaurant which offered surprisingly good selection for Rowan. The server was very polite and we all had a great time out together.
Upon our return, we packed up our stuff, preparing for the long, long, long drive ahead. We went to sleep that night, knowing we’d be making a lengthy journey the next day to the Loire.
