Today we arrived in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Venice, Italy! The weather this morning was not the greatest, and arriving in Venice, we where greeted with a wall of mist and a very strong cold wind. As we got further inside the Venice channel, the mist lifted a bit and the sun managed to come out for awhile. The first site as you enter Venice is a project that they are working on, called "Project Mose". Project Mose is a project intended to protect the city of Venice, Italy. It is an integrated defense system consisting of rows of mobile gates able to isolate the Venetian Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea when the tide reaches above an established level (110 cm) and up to a maximum of 3 m. It is engineered by FIAT.Venice is full of little bridges, crossing all over the town, there is no way to travel via car, once you get to Piazza Roma, which is the last stop a car can take, from there on its is by foot, or by bus, and when I say bus, I mean the water bus! They have there own bus stops and everything, pretty cool actually! They also have Taxi's to get around Venice, if you are brave enough, not just there driving (sailing?) but you need a very very deep wallet, it costs around 100 Euro's for an hour taxi ride! (that's around R1350 at todays rate)We did not book on any tours for Venice, and decided to do things by ourselves, we walked to Piazza Roma, and then made our way from there to San Marco's (St Marks) which is about an hour walk, it took us about 3 hours to get there, up this bridge, down that bridge, around this corner, down that alley, phew, you get the point! The street signs in Venice can get a little confusing, they tend to send you in two different directions, to get to the same place? See the picture...Venice, Directions?!
Venice DirectionsA lot of the shops consist of the most beautiful of Venetian glass, from the Island of Murano, not cheap, but beautiful. There are also many shops that sell very unique Venetian masks, ranging from 100 to 1000 Euros' for a mask! One shop had the most magnificent hand made puppets of cats, they where absoultly beautiful, at 1300 euros', We will not be bringing one back with us...Hand Made Puppets!
Venice - Cat PuppetsNot much more for today, as we are spending the night in Venice, and we get the entire day out (on foot) in Venice again tomorrowCarnival Freedom By Night.
