We had a leisurely breakfast of scrambled eggs and bacon and the Dutch bread which is white bread decorated with different sprinkles. Sof and Nik really loved this. Everyone just sat around eating and talking and we all felt very much at home. Joachim, Joel, Zed and Nik went to explore a nearby castle. I was going to go but then both Bella and Sof decided to stay and swim so I sat and watched them. Nik LOVED the castle and moat and was able to pick up swords, try on armour and was in 13 year old heaven. He was so excited about going to the castle.
When everyone returned and the girls had dried off, we sat down for cake and coffee. We tried a traditional cherry pie which Joachim and Mary-Anne wondered if our kids would like (as their kids didn't like cherry pie)
The castle is called Muiden castle and it is absolutely awesome. You don't have to be 13, you just have to be a bloke to appreciate a castle. Here is the wikipedia link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muiden check it out.
Nik and I got to examine all the means of defence and potential ways to attack the castle (not many ways to do that without heavy casualties. It has a drawbridge and a moat, for real! Which bloke would not be excited by a place like this?
We got to wield swords, Nik got to feel how heavy armour was (pretty damned heavy) and chain mail (also very heavy).
What a day. A castle, ice skating and then wine and food to the late hours discussing life, the universe and everything. I hope to get the opportunity to have this wonderful family as our guests back in Australia. We can't offer castles but we can provide beaches and wide open spaces. Actually we can provide beaches where there are no other people around, it will be all ours.
