So Salerno's a pretty cool city. We ended up having to take our main form of transportation, a SITA bus, from Amalfi to Salerno before taking the night train to Palermo, Sicily. The bus ride was really pretty. It was our first exposure seeing the remainder of the Amalfi coast. We passed through Minori, Maiori and got to see the mountain side all the way to Salerno (about an hour and a half maybe close to two hours total from Furore).
Salerno is a major city full of life and visitors, restaurants and tons of shopping. It also happened to be some sort of festival (which we’ve noticed the trend happens to be every Sunday here) so you’ll get to see the pictures of the festival and just us hanging out before taking the night train to Palermo.
The train. Omg!!! If ever there was a train ride to go down in history…this was it. So we enter the train and we’re unsure of which carozza (car train) we’re supposed to sit in. Well luckily, right before getting on the train I asked the man standing next to us a question and he ended up helping us some. His name was Salvo. Salvo, a Sicilian, was very helpful and super sweet and told Dame and I a lot about the train and Sicily. What poor Salvo could not prepare us for was the smell or the complete wack jobs (to say it as nice and politely as possible) that were on the train. [There’s a picture that I took out where you can see the silhouette of the man/woman I will describe shortly.]
So we walk onto this musty, crazy train with loud Dutch speaking teens and worse, sketchy older people. With every car that we walked by looking for our seat numbers on the door, we kept praying ours would be cool or best…empty. Well we’re walking by cars that smelled God awful, dark ones with the curtains drawn and loud chatty ones and finally we arrive at ours. We both have window seats sitting across from each other however we both have two more seats next to us-the middle and end seat by the car entrance. Dame was lucky enough to sit next to an oversized sleeping lady that didn’t move (at all) while I sat two seats away from a man/woman. We HONESTLY do not know till today if this person is a man or a woman, but heshe had about 5 teeth total, awful breath, ratty hair just above the shoulders, made a smacking noise with it’s mouth, oh and was crazy. Yep. That’s OUR car partner. Not sweet Salvo or the group two cars down – 3 Indians and 3 Dutch people having fun communicating with one another…the "Thing". So Dame, bless his heart, is terrified because he thinks the heshe wants to eat or kill him while having some crazy obsession with me because it WON’T stop staring at me. Words can’t describe this story at all. It’s literally a place holder and we have to tell you the whole experience in person or over the phone. Let’s just say, Eurotrip and the “Scuzi Train Scene’s’” got NOTHING on this train ride!!! Absinthe might have eased our pain…Either way, we made it just fine to Palermo where we enjoyed ourselves tons!!! Enjoy the pics!!!
