In the morning Astrid takes us to see the grave of her father Helmut and the graves on my grandparents at the old cemetery in Lechhausen. Graveyards are very well tended in Germany, with much effort made in planting.
We also visit a church in the fields near Ottmaring. It is a very ornate baroque church, and even contains a glass case with a dressed-up skeleton said to contain the relic of a saint. In the church garden is a modern ceramic sculpture which consists of a pyramid of eyeballs of differing types. Interesting.
Next we go for a walk through the forest at the Kuhsee (Cow lake), a beautiful and popular swimming spot alongside the Lech River at Augsburg. Here we have a bite of lunch: a new German favourite "currywurst". Hmm...
Later my aunt Erica has organised an afternoon tea. The chef at the konditorei in Freidberg personally delivers a stunning schwarzwälder kirschtorte (blackforest cherry cake) to Astrid's home.
We are joined by my cousin Walter from Munich who brings with him plenty of good humour (and a different coloured bunch of flowers for each of the girls). It is really nice to see my aunty and cousin again, and we have a very enjoyable afternoon together.
In the evening Wolfgang and Cornelia invited us to "Carmina Burana" presented by TheatreAugsburg (click here for a YouTube trailer - fabulous).
The performance was in the open air theatre at the "Rotes Tor" (or Red Gate - one of the main gates in the old Augsburg city walls).
A spectacular performance in a spectacular setting.
