HELSINKI, FINLAND  AUGUST 14

Yesterday afternoon we sailed into Helsinki.  It was a beautiful warm day as we navigated between all the islands that guard the harbor of Helsinki.  Many of the larger islands have old military fortresses on them where soldiers were garrisoned as late as the 50's.  We sat out on deck and admired the beautiful view.  We had dinner at "hot Rocks" on the pool deck.  It was lovely.  It started to rain as we finished dinner but we were under cover.

Today we awoke to a cold, rainy day.  This is the Helsinki that I remember from our last visit.  We boarded our bus and drove through the city seeing the various sites.  No one was anxious to leave the bus, but we stopped at the Sebelius monument for pictures and quickly returned to the bus.  There are thousands of tourists here.  There are at least 3 cruise ships here, one a Costa ship and a Carnival ship.  So everything is very crowded.  We then went to the famous Rock church.  I remember when we were last here in 1987, there were about 5 people in the Rock church and a young lady was playing the guitar.  We sat and listened to her for quite a while.  Today however, there were hundreds of people in the church and no music.  The church is still very beautiful.

We then went to the museum which was interesting but not spectacular and then to the Lutheran Church.  Dennis, Ron and I walked back to the ship and left John and Michael to roam through the town.  It was pouring once again by the time we returned to the ship.
