Where I stayed
We Arrived in Phuket after a short 1.5 hr flt. Patong beach is about 45 min away from the airport so we took one of the airport buses for 150Baht each, much cheaper than a taxi.
We arrived at our hotel, the Royal Paradise Hotel, around 3:00. The place was amazing, we were really impressed with the rooms, the service, the pool and location. Food was first on the agenda... we were tired and starving so room service it was and than spent some time relaxing by the pool. Afterwards we checked out some of the nightlife, did a bit of shopping and tried a dozen different Thai snacks. We took a walk along the beach, which becomes quiet and peaceful at night, accept for all of the sand crabs that kept popping up all around us and the few locals fishing.
Today's Order of Priority:
2. Beach (sun tanning, swimming, beer and food)
3. Thai massages on the beach
4. More relaxing on the beach
New Priority...: Find aloe vera gel for Meg's sunburn!!
5. Shopping, Dinner, Bed.
Today was all about chilling out. We got to the beach around 11:00 and got ourselves some beach chairs. At Patong beach and other beaches you have to pay for your spot on the beach with a chair, usually around 50-150 baht. Patong Beach is certainly known for being one of the most busiest beaches around. It's packed solid with foreigners but a great place. It is a gorgeous place to relax and you don't have to move from your chair - someone is always there when your drink is empty to ask you if you want another, people walk around to sell you cooked food, fresh fruit, try to sell you gifts, tours, and just about everything else you can think of. We both found it quite annoying though that everywhere you look you could find older men and their bought Thai women. Instead of getting a massage from all the younger Thai woman that were getting attention Meg and I went to two older woman (mom and daughter) that kept talking to us all day on the beach
After breakfast we signed up for an Island Hopping boat tour that would take us around to some great beaches and snorkelling spots along the inner coast of Phuket. Their was about 15 people, half english speakers mostly our age so we had a good time. In keeping with our being late for just about anything we had a timing for, after snorkelling we took a long walk around the Island to check out the view and sure enough we returned to find our boat launching off the beach! We ran so fast and had to practically swim to get on the back, he hopped on to find our guide occupied and it was only when we were a mile off shore that he took a head count!
We saw some of the more famous Islands - where the movie "The Beach" was filmed as well as a James Bond movie (sorry Maguire can't remember which one..?). We stopped off at Monkey Island, Meg had a great time feeding these guys that were hoarding tons of food from the tourists, but they knew how to play the game - a beautiful beach at the base of a tropical jungle, jutting cliffs, the boat pulls in and out of the trees comes a group of monkeys. The tourists believe them to be wild and exotic, meanwhile they see so many travellers each day I'm sure their English is better than mine!
At the end of our tour our guide showed us some areas that were hard hit from the Tsunami, some that have since recovered and some that are still struggling. Hearing some of the stories from the locals and seeing the land reminded me how powerful nature can be when it decides, more importantly how horrible it must have been for everyone involved
After a long day of visiting the Islands we returned to Patong, got some food and enjoyed the town.
Today we took off from the beach again and checked out a bit of the jungle. We went for an elephant safari. Our Elephant, "Nicole" was 35 years old and had quite the sense of humour. We had a lot of fun and our guide was great, didn't speak much English but kept us informed on where we were going and such.
Woke up had breakfast and checked out. We got to the airport just in time to check-in and board. During the take-off you can see all the beaches in and the islands around Phuket and we were wishing that we could stay another week.
Great time, by far the best place we've been to chill out and relax!
