Ah, Nelson! We pulled in yesterday and have been sleeping in a park full of drug dealers since...

This morning we went to McDonald's to charge our ipods and cell phone (Reason #413 We Love McDonalds: Free electrical outlets) and met two local Nelsonians: Sam and Cody. They might have only been 13 and 14, respectively, but they really were more informative than any info center we've been too. Now Cody really wouldn't shut up. Which was fine with us because we really couldn't stop laughing to interject our own thoughts anyway. He told us all about the surrounding areas and what to do and what not to do. He thought it would really funny to send us to a town that was modeled after an old western movie. But then he changed his mind and thought we should go kyaking at a national park about two hours south. And then he thought it would be funny to go visit Sam's house that was shown in the brochure (the tree right beside the old highschool). In the midst of them shouting out tourist activities, Sam got in trouble for his tshirt that said "McShit" and had to go into the bathroom and turn it inside out. Then Cody turned the topic of conversation to movies which he thought he was an ultimate authority. And he really had seen every movie. Molly and I thought it was particularly funny when he said, "Like in Lord of the Rings...you've seen Lord of the Rings, right?" and I with the most straight face and most serious tone said, "Lord of the Rings?" His (and Sam's) face dropped and they were speechless. And then Cody half fell out of chair trying to ask if i was serious. Molly and I got the greatest laugh from that. We learned these two kids entire lives and asked if we could come over for christmas. Since Sam's mother was a Jehovis Witness Cody said we could come to his house and his dad would buy us a present...like a hammer or wrench. Then the boys just took to making fun of Mike the Canadian.

Reason #785 We Love McDonald's: Great way to meet fun friends.

Nelson is supposed to be the sunniest place in NZ, especially this time of year. THis is where everyone comes for the christmas holiday. However we haven't been so lucky and have been plagued with rain everyday. And when it rains we go and see movies. We let Mike pick andhe chose Saw. The movie was sub-par and laughable at best. Right up there with National Treasure. Anyways...we met three Canadian travelers who were in the same movie and after talking for a few moments decided that they were our Bazarro Triplets just like Seinfeld.

We stood in the middle of the theatre lobby and chatted with them for about a half hour. Turns out that they are living out of a van just the same way we were...two girls and one guy, sleeping on sides of the road, sneaking into holiday parks for showers. The girls asked if we thought Mike was becoming more feminine the longer he lived with us and they confided that their Russel was indeed. We mentioned our van rules and they told us they only have one: the 2 on 1 rule. Basically if two people think you smell and need a shower they get to say "it's two on one. Take a shower. And use soap." We're thinking about taking that one as our own.

They were just finishing up a tour of the South Island, and we were just begining, so they told us where to stay, what old man to talk to to get the best deal, and where you'll get in trouble for sneaking into the holiday park. We decided to take their picture so we could just flash it around and benefit from it. However, they warned us not to show it in one West Coast town. We're not so sure why.

The more and more we talked about our vans the more we were anxious to see theirs. They had rented it and it was rumored to be tall enough to stand in. We couldn't wait to see it. They walked us across the street and our mouths just dropped. It had a sink and a bed that folded out from the ceiling and even cabinets to hold all their food. We were in such awe while Russell gave us the tour that we didn't even notice Ali (an uncanny resembalance to Britney Murphey) was taking pictures of us. She couldn't get over that there was someone out there, let alone three people, that were jealous of her van.

Unfortunately they were catching a ferry over to the north island and we were going back to our van parked on the side of the park to go to bed. They would have been fun friends.
