Flag of Ireland  ,
Monday, August 6, 2007

Another month has flown by already. All the fun we have had in Ireland may be a reason why it felt like it flew by so quickly. Ireland in many respects is very similar to the UK (we think many Irish would take offence to that however). But seriously they have similar lifestyles, cuisine, pub life, and general standard of living. However, many differences do exist, some are obvious while others are more subtle.
The natural beauty of Ireland is unlike anywhere else in the world. From the intimidating Cliffs of Moher, to the rugged Aran Islands, to the breathtaking north coast, to the stunning seaside villages, we were constantly left in awe of what we saw. I think we took enough pictures to fill a few albums here alone.
Ireland feels a little more rustic compared to its polished neighbour to the east. The emphasis on music and their traditional sessions in the pubs plays a lovely soundtrack to a nation of people intensly proud of who they are and where they come from.
The intensity is magnified as a result of the lack of much cultural diversity. Although immigration is evident (especially with Polish youth) you don't see nearly the level of diversity you may see elsewhere, particularly in the UK.
The pride that this largely homogenous nation has is truly astonishing. The difficult development and tumultuous history that they have experienced here is certainly fuel for that patriotism that is so impressive and arguably unmatched.
Over the past two months and close to 4000 miles the bar has been set very high. We are eagerly waiting to see what mainland Europe brings. Come on France!
