Hi all - quick update...made it down to Phnom Penh the other day to find that there were no more buses to Kampot that night, so I ended up crashing there and catching a bis 4 hours down to the seaside town of Kep yesterday morning. I met up with a girl from Germany and we shared a boat out to Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island) just off the coast of Kep. Apparently, Kep has no beaches, and seeing as I've been jonesing to get back into the ocean, I thought the island would be a better choice.
Well - it was interesting. I have to keep reminding myself that Cambodia is definitely not know for its beaches. Since it was the end of the official Khmer New Year, there was unfortunately a lot of trash on the beaches, not to mention cows, pigs and chickens (and I mean that literally, not metaphorically!) Still - it was nice to have a swim and lay on a beach for a while...that is until I stepped on a jellyfish this morning and ended up dousing myself in vinegar. Ah well. Met some really, really funny Cambodian university students who asked if they could take their picture with me (they don't get to interact with Westerners as much as they'd like) and I ended up in a full blown photoshoot on the beach with them climbing all over me. I swear they must have taken a hundred photos...it was absolutely hysterical - if they end up emailing them to me, I'll post them.
Anyhow - this morning I decided to go back to the mainland and took a motorbike 24 kilometers to Kampot, which is an old, French colonial town near the Bokor national park. I'm staying the night here and debating staying another night to go up to the park and check out the old, French hillstation there...but it's supposed to be quite cold and I barely packed anything, so I may end up staying a little closer to sea level.
I met an Aussie couple and their kids while I was on the island...they are expats living in Phnom Penh and really lovely...they're coming through Kampot tomorrow and have offered to give me a lift back to the city with them if I'm ready to get out of here (they hired a driver), so I may opt to do that and then spend a day shopping in Phnom Penh (Siem Reap is sooooo expensive!)
Ok - that's all the news for now - only 1 day of exploring to do!
Hope everyone's well!
