My plan for the day had been to visit a couple of places near the White Mountain National Forest.  Namely, the Polar Caves Park and Franconia Notch State Park.  Unfortunately, the precipitation that seems to be forever on my trail had decided to ruin my plans.  Since essentially everything in the region worth doing is located outdoors and everything closes when it rains, I suddenly found myself with a day full of nothing.

I decided that I was about due for an oil change, and that seemed like a good nothing-else-to-do activity, so I drove to the nearest service station in Meredith, NH.  While waiting for my car, I chatted with one of the car dealers who informed me she was originally from Maine.  She proceeded to make a few recommendations on places to visit while I was visiting her home state.

Having the rest of the day free, I decided to just drive around the area for a while and see what I could find and discovered that covered bridges are a popular thing to visit in the area.  With that in mind, I found a map with my phone and started driving from bridge to bridge to see if I could get any decent photos through the weather.  I visited the Smith Millennium, Blair, Swift Water, and Bath bridges throughout the rest of the day.

One interesting aspect of the day was the very distinct differences in altitude that the highway took from bridge to bridge.  As I drove, I watched the rain turn into slush, then sleet, then sleet that seemed to get lofted a bit more easily by the winds until finally I was high enough for it to be snowing.  The snow was thick and heavy, but it was an interesting change to watch, and as I came back down the process happened the same in reverse.  My final destination for the night was in Woodsville, NH where it snowed heavily all through the night, and I could find neither wireless internet nor a cellphone signal.
