My second full day in Queenstown involved a full day trip to Milford Sound. Now, Milford Sound and Queenstown look pretty close on the map, but you can't just drive as the crow flies. You have to drive south about 100 kilometers, then west to Te Anau for another 60 km or so, and then another 100 km up north again! The entire trip takes about four to four and a half hours, which is why we had to get an early start at 6 am.

The journey there is quite remarkable, especially Te Anau to Fiordland National Park, which passes through the Southern Alps. Even in the middle of November, which is summer in New Zealand, the pass was covered in snow. It was truly remarkable compared to the temperate climate of Queenstown.

The boat trip on Milford Sound itself was wonderful, if a bit cold and rainy. But the rain just makes the waterfalls prettier, right? In addition to the waterfalls, the sound features gorgeous geographical formations, and local wildlife. Milford Sound rounds out my top three New Zealand activities.

A few hours on the boat, and it was back to Queenstown that night.
