Dunedin is the Edinburgh of the south, with similar weather to boot. An early afternoon arrival gave me enough time for a whirlwind walking tour of the key downtown tourist sites, such as the University and the Cathedral, before hustling back to the hostel to get picked up for the wildlife tour.

The tour, which lasted a good six hours from 3:30-9:30, took us out to the tip of the peninsula. The first hour was aboard a boat where we spotted the local bird population, most spectacularly the albatrosses. Then, a quick trip back inland for seal and penguin watching.

The weather was awful: cold, windy, and rainy. Despite adequate layering, I was never warm and indeed quite miserable throughout the night. I had to keep reminding myself that I would have great memories (and pictures) of this place long after the ache in my bones had passed. It didn't help that the entire tour was on a sheep farm, meaning we had to dodge sheep patties while trying not to fall on our butts on the wet grass.

We first went out to the rocks to see the seals, and then back to the beach for the penguins (and more seals). Penguins are quite remarkable animals, among my favorites, and it was great to be able to see them (relatively) upclose.
