On the trip down from Greymouth, our driver passed around pictures of the heli-hike he had taken. This is where you take a helicopter to the top of the glacier, and then hike around the pristine ice before flying back down. The pictures were stunning. He pretty much single-handedly convinced five of us to do the half day heli-hike. I had also signed up for sky-diving early the next morning.
But the weather nixed both events. Instead, we did the standard half day hike of the Franz Josef glacier, which is still spectacular. It's also in my top three of New Zealand experiences.
