Morning ferry ride to Picton followed by a short bus ride resulted in a mid-day arrival in Nelson.

This gave me just enough time for a hike through town to a spot said to be the geographical center of New Zealand. I'm a little skeptical that the exact center is on a hill, rather than, say, fifty meters to the left of the peak, but it did offer great views of the surrounding area. I also walked through the park where the first ever game of rugby was played in New Zealand.
