From Franz Josef we made our way north to a place called Greymouth, the starting point for what was billed as "The Most Beautiful Train Journey on Earth", the Tranz Alpine Railway.
It winds its way across the NZ Alps (or the Remarkables, as they are called) all the way to Christchurch across loads of viaducts, through 18 tunnels and winding up, down and around the massive mountains.
To cut a long story short, it was nice, but not really amazing. We saw better scenery in other parts of NZ. But if there had been more snow on the mountains it would have been much better I reckon.
We spent only a night in Christchurch, sorting out what we were doing next. We had planned on going up to a place called Kaikora to swim with dolphins but the weather for the next few days was too bad and none of the companies were going out, so we decided to skip Kaikora and try to do it later on somewhere on the North Island.
