Mildura Renmark Ceduna Nullabor Kalgoorlie
Trip Start Sep 10, 2012
7Trip End Oct 08, 2012
Murray Downs Golf in the morning. Enjoyed 9 holes. Good golf course.
Followed the Murray River through the Riverina. Irrigated from the river…huge areas of vines – 95% of Australia's dried fruit eg. Sultanas, raisins, apricots etc. Vegetables etc.
Along the river to Mildura. Quite a large town.
Stayed at Quality Inn Mildura Inlander $110
Country & Western Music Festival week. Very busy.
Tuesday 2nd Oct
Short drive to Wentworth. The junction of the Darling River which comes all the way from Queensland, and the Murray River which originates in NSW. The colour difference very noticeable where they merged (Loch 10).
Morning tea sitting on the grass listening to part of the Country & Western Festival.
Circled back to Irymple just south of Mildura to Angas Park outlet – stocked up on huge variety of local Riverina dried fruits, nuts etc. Afternoon tea at Stefano’s Café. Unfortunately we missed having dinner at his restaurant at the Grand Hotel last night as it was closed!!!!
Then continued West on the Sturt Hwy to the Victoria/South Aust. Border where quarantine confiscated our Victorian fruit and veg.
Arrived in Renmark late afternoon. Prettiest little town yet. Once again on the Murray River.
Booked into Renmark Golf & Country Club $97.00 Dinner at the club.
Wed 3rd Oct
Early 9 holes. Other 9 holes under renovation. Nice golf course which will benefit from the replacement of the greens in the future.
Morning tea at Berri on the river. Berri – famous for citrus..orange juice etc.
Called into Banrock Station....great wine, great food and great walks. The wetlands have been restored with great information.
Followed the river along to Waikeri with lunch on the riverbank watching the small car ferry going back and forth.
We then put the car on the ferry and crossed to the northern side for our trip through Morgan - the rail head to Adelaide which had 8 trains a day going to and from Adelaide carting wheat and wool from further up the river which was transported down by paddle boats.
Here we left the Murray River to flow on its way South and we headed North West through Burra and on to Port Augusta.
Very pretty coming into Port Augusta through the southern Flinders Ranges.
Acacia Ridge Motor Inn $125 including cooked breakfast. Very good despite the high metal boundary fence with cantilevered barbed wire at top…keep locals out!!
Thursday 4th Oct
9 holes at Port Augusta Golf Club. Very hot and the lizards loving it!!!
Port Augusta to Ceduna across the top of the Eyre Peninsula. 468km.
Eventful driving day……emu crossing in front of us...managed to brake and stop.
Then confronted with a freshly killed kangaroo my side of road with an oncoming large truck. Only option to straddle the kanga….huge bang and very large bumps under the car. Stopped to inspect and fortunately no real damage. Mark used wooden stick to remove large pieces of flesh. However, at our coffee stop shortly after we discovered we smelt like a bbq and were immediately surrounded by millions of flies!!! No coffee - Jumped back in the car and drove off. The bbq smell persisted during the day until it burnt off the exhaust.
Arrived at Ceduna
Big4 Caravan Park….deluxe cabin $120.
Amazing seafood at the Ceduna Foreshore Hotel…lemon pepper squid followed by fresh grilled King George Whiting and a bottle of Oyster Bay Sav Blanc!!
Friday 5th Oct
Ceduna to Balladonia - 1000km
Early 7.30am start to tackle the Nullabor. Passed 5 wombats killed this morning on the road – around the Nundroo area – very sad. Hundreds of kangas killed on road...sad also, but they have a huge population compared to the wombats.
Kalgoorlie... Arrived midday. Kalgoorlie Overland Motel $130
Golf Tomorrow. Drive to Perth Monday.
