Memphis, TN to Dubuque, Iowa

Next morning got in some early morning hiking and managed to get access to some beautiful areas that were just getting the morning sun.  Got back in the Xterra and drove to the other side of the park that borders the Mississippi to find the starting of the Black Eye Susan’s.  This is also a great stopping point for a number of butterflies as they head southward over the border.

Continued on the Great River Road and it wasn’t long before I crossed into Missouri.  Very similar to Mississippi, delta’s, levy's and they goe on forever.   The towns are spaced out so at one point I was looking at the gas gauge nervously (even though I had 5 gallons in reserve).  The bright  spot for me was when I spotted a 7-11 as I got closer to St. Louis, it had been a while since I had a Slurpee.

The most beautiful sights in Iowa are the green fields, corn, beans, and even wheat carpet the hillsides for miles.  At one point while stopping for pictures I wanted to take a running leap and just get lost in the corn.  Needed to keep driving to make Dubuque but as I got closer the emergency alert system came on, something about hail, flash floods and sever thunderstorms heading straight towards me.  I thought briefly about the little 2-person tent I was carrying and pictured me trying to hold down the flaps as the hail pelted me senseless.  It would not be my call, this one was on mother nature.

Finally rolled into Dubuque and headed straight for the State park but when I got there the rangers questioned my shelter and pointed me in the direction of a Days Inn.  Just as well , as I needed to do laundry and who couldn’t say no to air conditioning and a soft bed.
