Last weekend, Kristen and I traveled to Kilkenny with our three Irish roommates, Aoife, Mairead, and Aisling. The bus ride was two hours but was beautiful. The center of Kilkenny is small but a typical Irish, colorful town--my favorite city center so far! We had dinner at Eddie Rockets which is the equivalent to Johnny Rockets back home. Loved the oreo shake ;). After dinner we walked across the street to a bowling alley and played a couple games.  Aisling's boyfriend, Kevin, came along as well.

That night we all hung out at Mairead’s house.  At all times you have tea and biscuits.  I think I had 10 cups just that night.

She lives on a 200 acre farm so in the morning we woke up and walked around it. She has over 50 cows, 40 horses, ducks, chicken and a couple other animals.  One part of her farm is on a hill which gives a very scenic view of Kilkenny city.

For the day we did all the "touristy things" as Mairead likes to say. We started at the Kilkenny Design Center. It was really cool and we saw jewelry and textiles being made in the shops. Next, we went to the Kilkenny Castle. The castle use to be home to the Butler Family for 600 years under English rule. The castle is massive in size and extravagantly decorated. Since the early 1970s, there has been conservation and restoration of the Castle. Part of it was in the process of being remodeled so the tour wasn’t everything that is usually shown.  The most interesting part to me was the maid’s tunnel.  The Butler Family felt that their view of their courtyard was ruined when they saw a maid walking from their sleeping quarters to the main building so they built a tunnel under the front lawn just so they didn’t have to get a little glimpse of them 1-2 times a day.

For the rest of the day, we toured around Kilkenny and had lunch at a cute cafe. That night, we went to Aoife's to see her home and met her family.  She lives right in Kilkenny city (Mairead’s farm is about 10 minutes from the city).  From Aoife’s we went to a pub for a fun night out with all of their friends.

In the morning, we went to mass with the Murphy’s at St. Mary's Cathedral. It was a gorgeous building with beautiful architectural details. Aoife then brought us to the Kilkenny Round Tower. It was about 10 floors of thin ladder like stairs that you had to climb. It was worth it once I got to the top because it was a beautiful view!

Aoife's mother made us dinner before we took the bus back to Cork. It was such a great weekend and I loved spending time with my roommates in their hometown.
