August 10 - by Emma

Today we went to 2 Civil War battlefields, and the first one we went to was called Antietam, which is in Sharpsburg, MD. When we got to that battlefield we learned that the Union won the battle of Antietam.  This battle was the bloodiest single day of the Civil War.  In one day, 23,000 soldiers died, were wounded, captured or missing!!!  When we got to this park we got our Junior Ranger books, and then watched the movie.  In the movie I learned that the battle was 1 day long and the men were fighting not for themselves but for their country and beliefs.   When we were done the movie we completed our Junior Ranger and I learned that a woman named Clara was a big help in the war because she brought wagons full of medical things.  While she was working on a patient, a bullet shot through her arm and into her patient.  She survived, but unfortunately her patient died.  After the war Clara established the Red Cross witch still provides care to people.  When we were done our Junior Ranger we got our badge and then drove to the next battlefield called Monocacy.  When we got there we got 2 Junior Ranger books, and worked on them.  The second book was a special one that marks the 150 year anniversary of the Civil War.   I learned that the Confederates won the battle of Monocacy.  Also I learned that during the battle, a family neamed the Worthington's had to hide in the cellar because the war was going on right outside of their house.  When we were done our Junior Ranger, we went down to the desk and got the badges.  The Ragers here were really nice and gave us a bunch of special treats because this was our 131 Junior Ranger.  When we got back to the campsite we went swimming for a bit and then we ate dinner.  After dinner we went to bed.  I had a fun day exploring the battlefields and learning about the Civil War.
